New Zealand Pathway Student Visa: 30 Weeks of English and Free Discipline Switching (20 July 2026 Changes)

What changed on 20 July 2026

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) announced four practical improvements to the Pathway Student Visa, all live from Monday 20 July 2026:

• The English-language study cap for first-time PSV holders moving to NZQCF levels 1 to 8 has been raised from 20 weeks to 30 weeks.
• Year 12 to 13 secondary students' visa conditions now specify only the qualification type and education provider, not the discipline, so they can switch subject areas with provider approval and no new visa application.
• The PSV now covers pathways at NZQCF levels 1 to 4, including English language study, foundation programmes, and vocational certificates.
• Year 12 to 13 secondary applicants only need to confirm the subject area, level, and provider at the time of application.

Why the 30-week English window matters for PTE candidates

Ten extra weeks of English study before you enter your main qualification is a real runway. For most PTE Academic candidates, the difference between a shaky 50 and a comfortable 65 or 79 is not talent, it is time on the right drills. Thirty weeks is enough to fix pronunciation habits, build a working vocabulary, and make the mechanical tasks automatic.

If you are planning ahead, the two highest-yield drills for the extra weeks are Write from Dictation and Describe Image. WFD alone contributes to both Listening and Writing scores, and Describe Image is where most first-timers lose Speaking marks to hesitation. Ten weeks of daily repetition on those two tasks tends to move the whole score.

The other upside is that a higher exit score is portable. You can use the same PTE Academic result later for an AEWV work visa, for a Skilled Migrant Category application, or for study in Australia or Canada. Aim above what your provider strictly needs, so the result is reusable.

Who qualifies for a Pathway Student Visa

The Pathway Student Visa lets a student stack up to three consecutive programmes with approved pathway education providers on a single visa. From 20 July 2026 it covers qualifications across NZQCF levels 1 to 8, which now explicitly includes:

• Levels 1 to 4: English language study, foundation programmes, and vocational certificates.
• Levels 5 to 7: diplomas and bachelor's degrees.
• Level 8: postgraduate certificates and diplomas.

Year 12 and Year 13 secondary school study is covered as a pathway component too. You still need an approved pathway provider, evidence of funds, and to meet the provider's English requirement for the qualification you are entering. (Source: Immigration New Zealand.)

How the new discipline-switching rule works

Before 20 July 2026, a Year 12 to 13 PSV holder who wanted to change subject discipline had to apply for a new visa. Under the new rule, the visa conditions only lock in the qualification type (for example, NCEA Level 2) and the education provider. Discipline is no longer a visa condition.

In practice this means a student who lands in New Zealand intending to focus on sciences and later decides to switch to business or arts can do so with provider approval alone, without lodging a new PSV application or paying another visa fee. INZ still expects the switch to sit inside the same qualification type and the same provider.

At application time, Year 12 to 13 students only need to state subject area, level, and provider, which is a lower documentation burden than before.

PTE Academic score you'll need for the pathway you switch into

An important clarification: Immigration New Zealand does not set a PTE Academic score for the Pathway Student Visa. The education provider sets the entry English requirement for each qualification. INZ only checks that you meet whatever the provider requires. The typical PTE Academic bands you will see across NZ providers look like this:

How this differs from the AEWV changes

Do not confuse the two 2026 changes. The PSV is a study visa: 30 weeks of English, discipline-switching, NZQCF levels 1 to 8. The AEWV is a work visa, extended on 1 June 2026 to skill level 3 occupations with a PTE Academic minimum of overall 29 set by INZ itself.

How to prepare over 30 weeks

A 30-week runway is generous. A workable split for most PSV holders looks like this:

• Weeks 1 to 10: baseline diagnostic and vocabulary. Sit a full free AI-scored PTE Academic mock in week one and again in week ten to see the honest gap. Build 20 to 30 words a day from our PTE vocabulary list.
• Weeks 11 to 22: mechanical drilling. Ten to fifteen minutes a day on Write from Dictation, ten minutes on Describe Image, and a Read Aloud set on the practice hub. This is where scores actually move.
• Weeks 23 to 30: full mocks under time. One scored mock per week, with a per-skill breakdown emailed after each attempt, so you can see whether you are safely above the provider's bar with headroom before you book the paid test.
