PTE score chart: PTE to IELTS, CEFR and PR points

At the overall level, PTE 63 to 70 is roughly IELTS 7.0 and PTE 79 to 85 is roughly IELTS 8.0. These are indicative overall equivalences; per-skill conversions differ, which is why Australia's per-skill rules look uneven. For tests on or after 7 August 2025, Superior English (20 points) requires Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85 and Speaking 88, each skill individually. No. Australia's Department of Home Affairs requires you to meet the cut score in every one of the four skills, not just an overall average. Most retakers are stuck one skill short, usually Speaking or Writing. A free mock test will show you exactly which skill is holding you back.

PTE 85 to 90 is C2, 76 to 84 is C1, 59 to 75 is B2, 43 to 58 is B1, 30 to 42 is A2, and 10 to 29 is A1. These map to the Global Scale of English.

PTE Academic uses one scale, the Global Scale of English, from 10 to 90. You get an overall 10 to 90 score plus a separate 10 to 90 score for each skill (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing), and a Skills Profile of the underlying traits. It depends entirely on your goal. 50 to 65 covers many universities and Competent migration English; 79-plus signals advanced English and clears most high bars. There is no universal good score, only the score your university or visa requires.

Yes. From 7 August 2025 the Department of Home Affairs switched from a uniform cut score (50 / 65 / 79 in each skill) to different per-skill cut scores, and the exam added two new Speaking and Writing tasks. The alignment tables are official but carry a measurement-error disclaimer, so treat conversions as indicative. The body you are applying to defines the exact score it accepts, so always use their requirement, not a conversion.

On the score chart, PTE 65 sits in CEFR B2 and PTE 79 sits in C1, so it is roughly one sub-level higher. A 65 covers many university entry requirements and solid everyday academic English, while a 79-plus signals advanced, proficient English and clears most higher bars. For Australian migration the points now depend on per-skill cut scores rather than a single overall number, so check each skill against the requirement, not just the overall.

10. The PTE scale runs from 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English, so no skill can score 0. An unattempted skill shows the 10 floor, not zero.
