Best PTE Books in 2026

The Official Guide to PTE Academic (Pearson) is the best single book, because it comes from the people who build the test and explains the real scoring. Pair it with Practice Tests Plus for timed rehearsal. No book scores your speaking or writing, so add scored online mock tests to see where you actually stand.

Rarely on their own. Books are excellent for learning the format and drilling reading and listening, but they cannot record your voice, mark your essay, or reflect the newest task types. Most people who reach 79 combine a book for fundamentals with repeated scored practice that gives feedback on speaking and writing.

There are very few dedicated PTE Core books, because Core is newer and the market has not caught up. The Official Guide covers overlapping skills, but Core swaps the essay for Write Email and uses everyday rather than academic English. The most reliable Core prep is targeted Core practice tests plus our Core vs Academic guide.

Partly. The core skills do not change, so an older grammar or vocabulary book is fine. But the test added new tasks such as Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation, and books printed before mid-2025 do not cover them. Use an old book for fundamentals, then practise the new task types online where they are kept current.

Be careful. Most "PTE book PDF" downloads are pirated, often out of date, and can carry malware. Pearson offers legitimate practice at no charge inside the Official Guide and on their site, and our scored mock tests and task practice are online and always current. Legitimate, up-to-date material beats a random PDF every time.

Start with one official book to learn the format and scoring, take a full scored mock to find your weakest skills, then drill those task types with feedback. Finish each week with a timed mock to rebuild stamina. Books set the foundation; scored practice tells you whether you are actually on target.

Reading rewards speed and accuracy under one shared section clock. Use Practice Tests Plus to drill Reading and Writing Fill in the Blanks and Re-order Paragraphs, build vocabulary from a word-list book, and never let one hard item eat your time. Then confirm your pace on timed Reading section tests.

One official book plus one practice-test book is enough printed material for most people. Adding a third book usually brings diminishing returns. Your time is better spent on repeated scored practice, because feedback on your speaking and writing is the thing a book fundamentally cannot provide.

Only if grammar is genuinely holding your writing back. A general upper-intermediate grammar book (B2 or C1 level) helps more than a PTE-branded one for that purpose. If your grammar is already solid, skip it and spend the time on timed task practice instead.
