PTE to IELTS: reverse lookup

Already have a PTE score and want the IELTS equivalent? Switch the converter above to I have a PTE score, or read the table in reverse: a PTE 65 sits in the 63 to 70 row, so it is about IELTS 7.0; a PTE 58 is about IELTS 6.5; a PTE 79 is about IELTS 8.0. For what each PTE band means in full, see the PTE score chart or run a number through the PTE score calculator.

Why a conversion is only a guide

A concordance is not a score requirement

Pearson states that score relationships between tests are always an approximation, because the tests are similar but not identical and concordance studies can only provide estimates. Just as important: the table does not represent what any university or visa program requires. Institutions set their own PTE thresholds, and many still reference slightly different equivalents. So use this to understand where you roughly stand, then check the exact PTE number on the university requirements page or the official immigration source before you apply.

What your target score unlocks

Once you know your rough equivalent, here is where each range tends to lead. Confirm the binding number with the receiving body.

PTE Core to CLB (Canada immigration)

Canada is the exception. For economic immigration (Express Entry and most PNPs) you take PTE Core, not PTE Academic, and IRCC maps it to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). This is an official per-skill conversion, not an approximation. Study permits, by contrast, accept PTE Academic.

Sources and method

Every number on this page comes from a primary source, not a third-party estimate:

  • IELTS to PTE: Pearson's official PTE Academic score comparison, using the concordance research published in July 2025 (a study on the current PTE Academic format).
  • PTE to CEFR: the Global Scale of English, which aligns PTE scores to CEFR levels (A1 to C2) by design.
  • PTE Core to CLB: IRCC's official language-test equivalency charts for Canadian immigration.

We verify these against PTE vs IELTS and our own PTE score chart, and review the figures each time the official sources update. How we build and check our guidance is set out in our editorial standards.

Frequently asked questions

IELTS Academic 7.0 maps to roughly PTE Academic 63 to 70 on Pearson's official concordance updated in July 2025 (the single point is 63). It is an approximate statistical equivalence, not a requirement, so use the exact PTE score your university asks for.

IELTS 6.5 maps to about PTE Academic 55 to 62 (Pearson's July 2025 single point is 55). Universities that ask for IELTS 6.5 publish their own PTE equivalent, often between 55 and 65, so check the specific course page.

IELTS 8.0 maps to about PTE Academic 79 to 85 (the single point is 79). PTE 79 also clears the old flat Superior English bar used for Australian migration.

IELTS 7.5 is about PTE Academic 71 to 78 on Pearson's July 2025 concordance. It is a statistical mapping between two different tests, so treat it as a guide and confirm the number your university or visa office requires.

Yes. Pearson published an updated IELTS to PTE Academic concordance in July 2025, based on a study of test takers on the current PTE Academic format. The overall picture is similar to before, but several bands shifted by a few points (for example IELTS 8.5 now maps to PTE 86 rather than the older 83).

Canadian economic immigration uses PTE Core, not PTE Academic, and IRCC publishes the official PTE Core to CLB conversion (see the table above). PTE Academic is for study and for migration to Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Full detail in our PTE for Canada guide.

No. A concordance shows how the two tests compare on average; it is not a score requirement. Institutions set their own PTE thresholds, so always use the official published number. Our university requirements pages list the exact PTE score each university asks for.

On the Global Scale of English, PTE Academic 59 to 75 is CEFR B2, 76 to 84 is C1, and 85 to 90 is C2. B1 is 43 to 58 and A2 is 30 to 42.

Neither is objectively easier; they test the same four skills in different formats. PTE Academic is fully computer delivered and AI scored, which removes examiner variability from Speaking and Writing. Read the full PTE vs IELTS comparison to pick the right test for you.
