Quick answer

For a New Zealand work visa (AEWV) you need PTE Academic overall 29 (IELTS 4.0 equivalent). For the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) 6-point residence visa you need PTE Academic overall 58 with no communicative skill below 50 (IELTS 6.5 overall). Most NZ universities want PTE Academic 58 to 65 overall for undergraduate entry and 65 to 73 for postgraduate. All PTE requirements are met with PTE Academic, not PTE Core. Last verified 10 July 2026 against Immigration New Zealand + NZQA + each university's English requirements page.

Do I need PTE Academic or PTE Core for New Zealand?

For New Zealand you take PTE Academic. New Zealand's immigration accepts PTE Academic on its official English-test list for every visa category that requires proof of English, and every accredited university accepts PTE Academic for entry. PTE Core is Pearson's test built specifically for Canadian immigration (IRCC); Immigration New Zealand does not list it as an accepted test.

If you are considering both destinations and weighing which test to book, see PTE Core vs PTE Academic. For everyone in this guide, the answer is PTE Academic.

What PTE score do I need for a New Zealand work visa (AEWV)?

For the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) you need overall PTE Academic 29, with no per-skill minimum. AEWV is the main employer-supported work visa route into New Zealand: your employer must be accredited by Immigration New Zealand, and you can only work for that employer in the specific role listed on the visa.

English is now required for AEWV skill levels 3, 4 and 5 (which together cover the majority of AEWV applicants). Alternatives to the test include being a citizen of an English-majority country listed by INZ, completing an English-medium qualification at a specific level, or having provided English-language evidence in an earlier AEWV application.

What PTE score do I need for the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) residence visa?

For the Skilled Migrant Category residence visa (the 6-point system that reopened in October 2023) you need PTE Academic overall 58 with no communicative skill below 50. This is the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band, or NZQA English Level 6.

SMC is New Zealand's main points-based route to permanent residence. Applicants score points for occupational registration, income, qualifications and work experience; you need at least 6 points total. English is a threshold requirement, not a points contributor — you must meet it before your application is assessed on points.

Note that SMC accepts the test only when it is less than two years old at the date of application, and you must submit the four communicative skill scores (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing), not just the overall. If your Listening or Writing score is below 50, the application will not clear the English gate even if your overall is above 58. Aim safely above the floor. (Source: Immigration New Zealand, SMC.)

For per-skill preparation, our task guides on Write from Dictation and Describe Image are the highest-leverage lifts for Listening and Speaking respectively, which are the two traits most SMC applicants fail on.

Green List occupations: Straight to Residence and Work to Residence

The Green List is Immigration New Zealand's list of in-demand occupations that qualify for faster residence pathways. There are two tiers:

  • Tier 1 (Straight to Residence Visa): for the most in-demand occupations (many senior health, engineering, science and construction roles). You can apply directly for residence without a work-to-residence stage. English is met through an approved qualification for most listed occupations; where a test is required, the SMC-level standard of PTE 58 overall applies.
  • Tier 2 (Work to Residence Visa): for other Green List roles. You get a work visa first, work in the role for typically 24 months, then apply for residence. The English threshold at the work-visa stage is the AEWV level (PTE overall 29); the residence stage aligns with SMC (PTE overall 58 with no skill below 50).

The Green List is updated periodically. Before you plan around a specific occupation, verify it is still Tier 1 or Tier 2 at Immigration New Zealand's Green List page.

What PTE score do I need to study in New Zealand?

You do not need to meet an Immigration New Zealand English test for a student visa if you are enrolled with an accredited education provider — the provider's admission requirements are what matter. Every major New Zealand university accepts PTE Academic. Typical bands:

Programme levelPTE Academic overallNotes
Foundation / diploma42 to 50Some no-band-below rule usually applies
Undergraduate50 to 58Bachelor of Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering
Postgraduate coursework58 to 65Master's programmes at most universities
Postgraduate research65 to 73PhD, research masters, professional programmes
Health sciences (medicine, dentistry, nursing)65 to 79Higher bars for registered health professions

The exact requirement is set by each institution and each programme. The next section lists the eight New Zealand universities individually, with the entry PTE score and a link to their official English requirements page.

PTE score for every New Zealand university

These are the eight universities that make up the New Zealand university system (Te Pōkai Tara, Universities New Zealand). Every one accepts PTE Academic. Scores below are for direct entry to a bachelor's degree; postgraduate entry is typically 5 to 8 points higher. Always verify on the university's own English requirements page before applying.

UniversityRegionPTE Academic (undergrad)Source
University of AucklandAucklandOverall 58, writing 50Auckland English requirements
Auckland University of Technology (AUT)AucklandOverall 50, writing 42AUT English requirements
Massey UniversityPalmerston North, Wellington, AucklandOverall 58, no band below 50Massey English requirements
University of WaikatoHamiltonOverall 50, no band below 42Waikato English requirements
Victoria University of WellingtonWellingtonOverall 58, writing 50Victoria English requirements
University of CanterburyChristchurchOverall 58, writing 50Canterbury English requirements
Lincoln UniversityLincoln (Canterbury)Overall 50, no band below 42Lincoln English requirements
University of OtagoDunedinOverall 58, writing 50Otago English requirements

The pattern across the eight universities is clear: PTE Academic overall 58 with writing 50 covers the strict half (Auckland, Massey, Victoria, Canterbury, Otago), and PTE Academic overall 50 covers the more accessible half (AUT, Waikato, Lincoln). Postgraduate coursework raises this to 58 to 65 at most institutions; research degrees and health sciences run higher still.

Post Study Work Visa: no English test required

If you complete an eligible qualification at a New Zealand education provider, you can apply for a Post Study Work Visa without meeting a separate English requirement. Immigration New Zealand accepts your NZ qualification as evidence of English. The visa length depends on where you studied and what level:

  • Bachelor's or higher completed anywhere in New Zealand: up to 3 years' post-study work.
  • Non-degree qualification at level 7 outside Auckland: up to 2 years' post-study work.
  • Level 4 to 6 qualification outside Auckland: 1 year's post-study work (subject to conditions).

For the current tenure rules, see Immigration New Zealand, Post Study Work Visa.

How to prepare for the PTE Academic score you need

The right prep intensity depends entirely on the target. Rough guidance:

  • PTE 29 (AEWV work visa): two to four weeks of focused practice for most applicants. Prioritise Read Aloud fluency and Repeat Sentence accuracy. A single free mock test tells you if you are already there.
  • PTE 58 with no skill below 50 (SMC residence, most universities): six to eight weeks of daily practice. The trap is the per-skill minimum: many applicants clear 58 overall but fail on 45 in Listening or Writing. Drill your weakest skill to at least 55 before booking the exam.
  • PTE 65 or higher (research degrees, health sciences): two to three months of structured preparation for most non-native applicants. This is the “Superior” band; look at our 79+ strategy guide for the plan.

The single highest-leverage task on the exam is Write from Dictation: every correct word scores in both Listening and Writing, which are the two traits most SMC applicants fail on. Drilling it daily is often the fastest path to clearing the 50-per-skill floor.

Your next step, mapped to your visa

  • Applying for AEWV: take a free scored mock to confirm you already clear PTE 29. If you do, book the exam. If not, drill Read Aloud + Repeat Sentence for two weeks and re-mock.
  • Applying for SMC or Green List Tier 1 residence: take a scored mock and identify which of your four communicative skills sits below 50. Drill that skill first for four weeks, then re-mock.
  • Applying to a NZ university: confirm the exact PTE minimum on your target programme's admission page (linked in the table above). Take a mock. Set your prep window based on the gap.
  • Not sure which visa you qualify for: start with the Immigration New Zealand visa finder and come back once you know the pathway.
