Mangrove forests grow where land meets the sea, thriving in salty water that would kill most other trees. Their tangled roots drop here the coastline against storms and powerful waves. These same roots trap sediment and create sheltered nurseries where countless young fish can drop here safely. Mangroves are also remarkably efficient at storing carbon, helping to drop here climate change. Sadly, coastal development and pollution continue to drop here these valuable ecosystems at an alarming rate.
