PTE Academic UKVI: what it is and which UK visas accept it (2026)

The 60-second answer

You want a UK visa, you have heard PTE Academic UKVI is an option, and you want to know what it actually is. Here it is plainly: PTE Academic UKVI is PTE Academic, the identical computer-based English test, but sat at a UKVI-approved SELT centre and reported to the Home Office with a Unique Reference Number (URN) so it counts for a UK visa. Same four skills, same tasks, same timing, same score on the 10 to 90 scale.

So there are really only three things to get right. First, that your route accepts PTE Academic UKVI (most UK work and study routes do). Second, the CEFR level your route requires, which for Skilled Worker, Innovator Founder and degree-level Student is B2. Third, that you book the UKVI version rather than plain PTE Academic. What PTE Academic UKVI actually is

UK Visas and Immigration does not run its own English exam. Instead it approves a small list of Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) from trusted providers, sat under strict identity and security controls at approved centres. Pearson is one of those providers, and PTE Academic UKVI is its four-skills SELT for work and study visas.

The exam itself is not a special UK-only paper. It is ordinary PTE Academic (reading, writing, speaking and listening on one screen-based session) delivered inside the approved SELT process. What that process adds is the security wrapper the Home Office trusts, and the Unique Reference Number printed on your result, which is what lets a caseworker verify the score against UKVI records. Without that URN and the approved-centre chain, a PTE result cannot be used for a visa, even though the English it measures is exactly the same.

Because the content is identical, so is preparation: practising for PTE Academic is practising for PTE Academic UKVI. The distinction is administrative, not academic.

PTE Academic vs PTE Academic UKVI vs PTE Home

Three Pearson products sound similar and get mixed up constantly. This table is the one to keep. The critical thing to notice: PTE Home is a different test, not a UKVI badge on PTE Academic. It is a shorter two-skills test for the family and citizenship routes.

In short: choose PTE Academic for a university offer, PTE Academic UKVI for a four-skills UK work or study visa, and PTE Home only for the speaking-and-listening family, settlement and citizenship routes. Which UK visa routes accept PTE Academic UKVI

PTE Academic UKVI is a four-skills SELT, so it fits the work and study routes that test all four skills, at the CEFR level each route sets. The table below pairs the common routes with their minimum level and whether PTE Academic UKVI covers them. Speaking-and-listening-only routes use PTE Home instead, not PTE Academic UKVI.

What PTE score you need for each CEFR level

Your route gives you a CEFR level; PTE gives you a number on the 10 to 90 scale. The approximate mapping is below. Treat it as a planning guide, not the official minimum, because the exact SELT threshold is set by UKVI and Pearson and can differ from a straight band conversion.

How and where to book PTE Academic UKVI

Booking PTE Academic UKVI is not the same as booking a normal PTE Academic slot, so follow the steps in order:

1. Confirm your route needs it. Read the gov.uk page for your visa and note the CEFR level. If your route is speaking-and-listening only, you want PTE Home, not PTE Academic UKVI.
2. Book through Pearson, choosing the UKVI product. On the Pearson booking system, select PTE Academic UKVI specifically. It is easy to book plain PTE Academic by mistake, and that result will not be accepted for a visa.
3. Pick an approved SELT centre. PTE Academic UKVI must be sat at a UKVI-approved centre. Pearson lists these when you book; centre availability is more limited than for standard PTE, so book early.
4. Bring the right ID. SELTs have strict identity rules (usually a valid passport). Check Pearson's requirements before test day.
5. Keep your URN. Your result carries a Unique Reference Number. That is what your visa application uses to verify the score, so keep it safe.

Pearson operates test centres in many countries worldwide, but not every centre is UKVI-approved, so always filter for the UKVI version when booking. Fees and centre availability vary by country and change over time, so check the current price and dates on Pearson's own site rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere. PTE Academic UKVI vs IELTS for UKVI

IELTS for UKVI is the other big four-skills SELT, so many applicants weigh the two. Both are Home Office-approved, both cover the same work and study routes, and both report to the same CEFR levels, so acceptance is not the deciding factor. The practical differences are the same ones that separate PTE Academic and IELTS generally:

• Format. PTE Academic UKVI is fully computer-based, including speaking into a microphone, and is scored by AI. IELTS for UKVI can involve a face-to-face speaking interview with a human examiner.
• Results speed. PTE typically returns results faster, often within a couple of days, which matters when a visa deadline is close.
• Scoring feel. PTE's 10 to 90 scale and automated marking suit test-takers who prefer a consistent, machine-scored experience; others prefer speaking to a person.

How to prepare for PTE Academic UKVI

Since PTE Academic UKVI is the same exam as PTE Academic, your preparation is ordinary PTE practice aimed at the CEFR level your route needs:

1. Set your target. Translate your route's CEFR level to a PTE band using the table above and our score chart. For most work and study routes that is B2.
