In one line

For Australian PR, both PTE Academic and IELTS are accepted and earn the same migration points, so the real choice is the test experience: PTE is fully computer-based with AI-scored speaking and results in about two days; IELTS has a face-to-face human speaking interview. Pick the one that suits how you perform, not a myth about which is “easier”. Last reviewed 9 June 2026.

The 30-second answer

Australia's Department of Home Affairs accepts both PTE Academic and IELTS (Academic or General Training) as proof of English for the points-tested skilled visas (189, 190 and 491), and each test earns the same migration points at the same English level. So neither test gives you a points advantage. The decision is about how you test:

  • Lean PTE if you are comfortable at a computer, want results in about two days, and would rather speak into a microphone than sit across from an examiner.
  • Lean IELTS if you prefer a real human speaking interview, want the option to retake just one weak skill, or your skills-assessing body specifically asks for IELTS.

One thing changed in 2025 that most articles still get wrong, and it matters for which test is easier to score on: read the equivalence table below before you book either one.

Do both count for Australian PR points?

Yes. For the points test, English ability is scored in three levels, and the points are identical whether you prove them with PTE or IELTS:

  • Competent English: 0 points (this is the basic eligibility threshold for most skilled visas).
  • Proficient English: 10 points.
  • Superior English: 20 points.

The catch that trips people up: the Department of Home Affairs requires you to hit the minimum in each of the four skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking), not an average. One weak skill caps your whole English score, so a 7.5 average with a 6.5 in writing only counts as Competent. IELTS General Training is the usual choice for migration; you only need IELTS Academic if your skills-assessing authority asks for it. PTE vs IELTS score equivalence for AU points (2026)

This is what almost every other page gets wrong. On 7 August 2025 the Department of Home Affairs updated PTE Academic to a new test with different scores per skill. The old flat numbers (Superior = 79 in every skill) no longer apply to a PTE test taken now. IELTS bands did not change. Here is the current mapping, with the minimum needed in each skill:

English level (points)IELTS (each band)PTE Academic (Listening / Reading / Writing / Speaking)
Competent (0)647 / 48 / 51 / 54
Proficient (10)758 / 59 / 69 / 76
Superior (20)869 / 70 / 85 / 88

Source: Australian Department of Home Affairs English language requirements (Competent, Proficient and Superior pages). Always confirm the current thresholds there before you book.

The practical insight nobody else spells out: under the new PTE, Superior English demands a 85 in writing and an 88 in speaking, which are genuinely high bars, while listening and reading only need 69 and 70. IELTS asks for a flat 8 in all four. So if writing and speaking are your weaker skills, IELTS 8 can be the more reachable path to the 20 points; if listening and reading are your strength, PTE can get you there faster. There is no universal “easier” test, only the one that fits your skill profile.

One more note: if you sat PTE on or before 6 August 2025, the legacy mapping (Competent 50, Proficient 65, Superior 79 in every skill) still counts as evidence until 6 August 2028.

The differences that actually affect your score

Beyond the numbers, a few real differences decide which test you score better on:

  • Speaking: machine vs human. PTE records you at a computer and scores speaking with AI, which removes examiner bias and any nerves about being judged in person, but it rewards steady, clear, well-paced speech and penalises long pauses. IELTS is a face-to-face interview with a trained examiner, which suits people who freeze at a microphone but talk naturally to a person.
  • The August 2025 PTE change. PTE now uses double marking (AI plus a human reviewer) on the content of seven of its task types, specifically to catch memorised, templated answers. Pronunciation and fluency stay AI-only. The takeaway for both tests is the same: practise genuine, original answers, not a recited template.
  • Results speed. PTE typically returns scores in about two days. IELTS computer-delivered is roughly one to five days; paper-based can take about 13 days. If you are racing an invitation round or a visa deadline, PTE is faster.
  • Retakes. IELTS offers a One Skill Retake: if you miss the mark in just one skill, you can redo that single skill rather than the whole test. PTE has no single-skill retake, so a weak skill means sitting the full test again.

Which should you pick?

Both are accepted and both earn the same points, so choose by how you perform, not by reputation:

  • Choose PTE if you are comfortable working at a computer, want results fast, are confident speaking into a microphone, and your listening and reading are strong (the easier path to PTE's per-skill thresholds).
  • Choose IELTS if you prefer a human speaking interview, you want the safety net of the One Skill Retake, you are chasing Superior English and find a flat band 8 more attainable than PTE's 85 writing / 88 speaking, or your assessing body requires IELTS.

The smartest move is to find out where you actually sit before you pay for either exam. A free PTE Academic mock gives you an AI-scored, per-skill estimate in one sitting, so you can see whether you are closer to Proficient or Superior, and which skill is holding you back, before committing time and money to a real test date.

Fees, validity and how to prepare

  • Fees: both sit around AUD 490 in Australia in 2026, so cost is not a real differentiator. Confirm the exact price when you book, as it varies by centre and date.
  • Validity (read this carefully): the Department of Home Affairs accepts a test taken within 3 years before your invitation. But your PTE score report expires from your Pearson account after 2 years, so if you rely on PTE, secure or send your scores before the two-year mark rather than assuming the full three years.
  • Preparation: the fastest route to the points you need is to take a full, timed, scored mock, see exactly which skill is under the line, drill that one weakness, then retest. Our free AI-scored mocks grade your speaking and writing with real AI and email a per-skill breakdown with a plan to your target. If you are aiming for the 20-point Superior band, our PTE 79 strategy guide focuses on the high-end writing and speaking scores that band now demands.

Frequently asked

Are both PTE and IELTS accepted for Australian PR in 2026?

Yes. The Department of Home Affairs accepts both PTE Academic and IELTS (Academic or General Training) for the points-tested skilled visas (189, 190 and 491), and both earn the same migration points at the same English level.

Is PTE easier than IELTS for Australian PR?

Neither is universally easier. They earn the same points. PTE suits strong computer users and people confident speaking into a microphone, with stronger listening and reading. IELTS suits people who prefer a human speaking interview or who find a flat band 8 easier than PTE's high writing and speaking thresholds.

What PTE score equals IELTS 7 or IELTS 8 for Australia?

Since 7 August 2025, PTE uses per-skill thresholds. Proficient English (like IELTS 7) needs PTE Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76. Superior English (like IELTS 8) needs PTE Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88. Always confirm on the Home Affairs website.

How many PR points does English give?

Competent English gives 0 points (it is the basic eligibility threshold), Proficient English gives 10 points, and Superior English gives 20 points. You must hit the minimum in each of the four skills, not an average.

Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for migration?

For the Home Affairs points test, both are accepted and General Training is the usual migration choice. You only need IELTS Academic if your skills-assessing authority specifically requires it.

Is PTE speaking scored by a computer or a person?

PTE speaking is scored by AI at a computer, which removes accent bias. Since August 2025 a human also reviews the content of some task types, but pronunciation and fluency stay AI-only. IELTS speaking is a face-to-face interview with a human examiner.

How fast are PTE vs IELTS results?

PTE usually returns results in about two days (up to five). IELTS computer-delivered takes roughly one to five days, and paper-based takes about 13 days.

Can I retake just one skill?

IELTS offers a One Skill Retake, so you can redo a single weak skill instead of the whole test. PTE does not offer a single-skill retake, so you sit the full test again.

How much do PTE and IELTS cost in Australia?

Both are around AUD 490 in 2026, so cost is not a meaningful difference. Confirm the exact fee when you book, as it varies by centre and date.

How long is a PTE or IELTS score valid for Australian migration?

Home Affairs accepts a test taken within three years before your invitation. Note that your PTE score report expires from your Pearson account after two years, so secure or send your PTE scores before the two-year mark.

Which test is better if I get nervous speaking to an examiner?

PTE, because you speak into a microphone at a computer rather than to a person. If a microphone makes you freeze but you speak naturally in conversation, IELTS may suit you better.

Did the PTE scores for Australia change in 2025?

Yes. On 7 August 2025 PTE Academic became a new test with different per-skill score thresholds. The old flat numbers (Superior 79 in every skill) only apply to PTE tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, which remain usable as evidence until 6 August 2028.

Can I practise PTE for free before I book?

Yes. You can take a free, AI-scored PTE Academic mock test on PTE Mocks to get a per-skill estimate of your band before paying for a real exam, so you know which skill to work on first.
